Traveling 40,000 miles and inspiring love and despair in equal measure, Lt. Minter Dial's lost Annapolis ring altered the lives of many - not just those who gazed upon its blue stone.

The spellbinding account of one man's obsession with a family mystery - and the product of decades of research and inquiries - The Last Ring Home explores author Minter Dial's pursuit of the true story of his namesake, his late grandfather Lt. Minter Dial, USN, a celebrated war hero whose suffering and trauma nearly buried his memory forever.

A prisoner of the Japanese in the Philippines after the fall of Bataan and Corregidor, Lt. Dial discovered the cruelest meaning of the Bushido code. Moments before he was killed, he gave his treasured Naval Academy ring to a friend. In the ensuing chaos, it disappeared.

Armed with a passion for history and a desire to uncover his grandfather's legacy, Dial's epic quest for the ring transports him to prisoner-of-war memorials and ex-POW conventions, military and press archives, and the homes of those affected by the Second World War across the world.

Sweeping as far back as the American Civil War, The Last Ring Home combines rigorous research with more than 100 interviews with experts, survivors, and descendants of the Greatest Generation to tell the powerful story of American prisoners of war in the Pacific.

The Last Ring Home A POW Lasting Legacy of Courage Love and Honor in World War II (Audible Audio Edition) Minter Dial II Erin deWard Audible Studios Books

Absolutely gripping story. Well researched and written.
The letters between Minter & Lisa are both heart-breaking and encouraging since one knows the outcome. But they also show devoted love; love that can't be denied; love that so strongly connects two hearts.
And then there's the story of The Ring - incredible!!
As a Naval Academy grad, I have always held other grads like Minter that served and gave their lives for our country in very high esteem, hoping to live my live as honorably and sacrificially as they each did. [P.S. I hold all veterans of all branches with the same regard - heros.]
Wondering if the Ring will be found again. What an end to the story that would be!

The Last Ring Home A POW Lasting Legacy of Courage Love and Honor in World War II (Audible Audio Edition) Minter Dial II Erin deWard Audible Studios Books Reviews

Minter Dial Has done and impressive job researching an overlooked slice of history, and giving us glimpses into the interconnectedness of a past era. His interviewees and family speak with an authenticity that gives voice to his grandfather’s naval legacy. “The Last Ring Home” is a family memoir that reflects the dynamics of the United States and the world at war. It is historical writing at its best, and I recommend it to anyone with an interest in naval, Philippine or Pacific WW II theater history.
I am a voracious reader of history and memoirs. Often we overlook the pain that those left behind endure. This is an amazing story of discovery and at the same a tremendously sad love story. I read it in one sitting and I caution everyone that they should be prepared to cry at numerous moments. I can not give a stronger recommendation. Rarely have I ever been so moved. Say prayers of thanks and hold those dear to you a little tighter.
An extraordinary book. Mr Dial shares with us an incredible, personal journey as he delves into his family history. Here is the "greatest generation" in the form of his grandfather, a touching love story and the heart wrenching agony of loss. The reader feels privileged to join Mr. Dial as he comes to know his hero namesake and addresses wounds his family has been unable to touch for 70 years. If your interested in WWII in the Pacific, the US Navy and the Philippines there is an insight here that paints an authentic picture. Mr. Dial's writing style is excellent. For a first book this is an incredible effort. I hope he will find another topic to which he can bring his passion and fine story telling skills.
Just finished reading this remarkable book. Breathtaking and extremely touching. Thorough work accomplished by the author who is not a historian by profession but this book is one of the top 3 history books I ever read. Highly talented and hard worker, the author's extraordinary motivation source is of course family and "filiation". Two accounts particularly touched me (among many others)
- the conversation between the author and his Father (son of the hero) in the wake of 9/11 attacks
- the french elementary school girl who raised her arm and asked the author to help her find her biological parents
Thank You Minter(s)
Last Ring Home is an outstanding depiction of the subject's life and the culture that produced him. The author provides the background necessary to understand the hero and his devotion to his family and country. As an Academy graduate myself (USMMA 86), the story of the Ring was a fascinating journey. The death of the Asiatic Fleet, of which the hero was part, shows the reader the human cost of unpreparedness and miscalculation. Any age and both men and women will find the story compelling!
Reading “The Last Ring Home” had a tremendous impact on me. This account of a grandson’s grandfather and his experience in WWII would completely overwhelm anyone fully capable of grasping the magnitude of the collective sacrifice made by those who served and suffered in that brutal war, to say nothing of the ripple effect it continues to have on generations of descendants around the world. Reading this tale greatly renewed the gratitude I have for Lieutenant Commander Minter Dial and others who have served. It also revived my dormant interest in the history of WWII in the Pacific.

Minter Dial II has a gift for writing that is demonstrated in the depth and richness of detail he weaves together in this book. As the parent of a Naval Academy grad and Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, I certainly hope that precious ring finds its way home again. Regardless, I wish that Mr. Dial finds fulfillment in bringing his grandfather’s legacy to the world.

Read this book!
This is a marvelous book to read, although you will need a box of tissues next to you.

It is a "Greatest Generation" story like you have never, ever read before. Told by the grandson, this is the story of the grandfather he never met who became the human equivalent to an urban legend...only it was all true. This book is raw, honest, beautiful, insightful, and about the legacy of World War II as well.

An important aspect of this book which you often do NOT hear about is how wartime affects the families these individuals leave behind. This is as real as it gets. It has been a long time since I sat down and read something cover to cover without moving.
